OLD 96 CHAPTER
of the SOUTH CAROLINA
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

The Old 96 Chapter of the S.C.G.S. does not incorporate all of the Old 96 District. Most of the counties comprising the Old 96 District have their own chapters, except for Abbeville County. The Chapter recently voted to delete "District" from the name. The Old 96 Chapter covers the area of Greenwood, Abbeville and part of Edgefield and McCormick Counties.

The County of Greenwood was made from the upper part of Edgefield and part of Abbeville Counties. Later, part of Greenwood County was taken to make McCormick County. The old records remain in the parent counties, but of course the cemeteries remain where they were. We are proud to be the home of the Ninety Six National Historic Site, which includes Star Fort and to have the Cherokee Trail running through our county. Historic Abbeville is nearby, with the county line being just outside our city of Greenwood. We cannot do extensive research for members, but do answer inquiries and make suggestions. A list of paid researchers can be obtained from the SC State Archives, 8301 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC 29223 (803-896-6100)

Every Wednesday morning, from 9:00 to 12:00, some of our members volunteer at the Greenwood County Library to help interested people do research. We welcome out of state members to come on Wednesdays so we can become acquainted with them and assist them in their research. We also re-shelve books, read shelves and perform numerous other duties.
